Bhandara: In a tragic incident, ten children were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a hospital in Maharashtra's Bhandara late Friday night. There were 17 babies in the unit of whom seven could be rescued The state government also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. Srinagar-Jammu Highway Restored, Stranded Traffic Being Cleared.  After remaining closed for five days, the strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway was restored for traffic on Friday, but authorities said only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move. Heavy snow in the Bannihal sector and rockslides in Ramban and Udhampur districts had resulted in the closure of the nearly 300-kilometre long highway that is the supply lifeline for the landlocked Kashmir Valley. Authorities said Friday afternoon that snow and rock slide debris have been removed from the highway and it has been restored for traffic.   “Only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move today and no fresh traffic will be allowed either from the Jammu or Srinagar side,” an official of the traffic department said. Over 6,000 vehicles, most of them carrying essential supplies to the valley, are stranded at different points on the highway at present.   The priority of the authorities is to decongest the highway

Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Sentenced To 15-Year Imprisonment In Pakistan.  Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, on Friday (January 8) sentenced to 15 years by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan, according to media reports. Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was arrested over terror financing charges six days ago. Lakhvi was arrested by Punjab province’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and a case was registered in a Lahore police station. The LeT commander was out on bail since 2015. In December 2008, the UN had designated Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi as a global terrorist for being associated with LeT and al-Qaeda and for “participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or perpetrating of acts by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf or in support of” both the entities.

Weatherman says snowfall to continue till late evening or early tomorrow Srinagar, Jan 5 (GNS): Meteorological department on Tuesday said that present weather conditions are likely to continue till late night of early tomorrow and thereafter forecast “significant” improvement.    At present, heavy snowfall is going on in entire Kashmir, crippling normal life across the Valley. Most people have preferred to stay indoors even as a very minimal traffic movement was seen on road with commuters struggling to make the way.       “Present weather conditions are likely to continue till late tonight or early tomorrow,” an official of the weatherman said as per GNS. “We expect significant improvement in weather from tomorrow (January 6) in jammu and Kashmir,” he said, adding, “With that, cold wave will return from January 7th onwards with warmer days and colder night.” (GNS)

Kashmir University has postponed all undergraduate exams scheduled on Monday in view of inclement weather, officials said today. All Kashmir University undergraduate examinations scheduled to be held on January 4, 2021 (Monday) are postponed in view of the inclement weather conditions, said an official. The new dates for the deferred examinations will be notified separately later, Controller of Examinations Prof Irshad A Nawchoo said in a statement.
